Cherub Sketches
Project type
Graphite Illustrations
Date
Sept 2016
Location
New York
I began this drawing by following the quiet movement between the figures rather than planning a scene. Three small winged bodies drift across the surface of the canvas, their forms emerging through soft graphite. I was drawn to the gentle exchange between them, one reaching upward while another leans toward a companion, creating a moment that feels suspended and intimate.
The cherubs are not meant to feel distant or monumental. I kept their features rounded and simple, letting the pencil marks remain visible so the drawing holds onto the warmth of the hand that made it. The texture of the canvas stays present throughout the image, interrupting the shading and allowing the figures to appear as though they are forming out of the surface itself, floating quietly in an open and undefined space.
