I created this piece as an exploration of vulnerability and strength existing in the same body. Working in charcoal and graphite allowed me to focus on contrast — not just light against darkness, but presence against absence. The figure is turned away, which for me shifts the attention from identity to form, from who she is to what she carries. The back becomes a landscape of tension and softness, of shadow pooling along the spine and light resting gently on skin.
I was drawn to the quiet honesty of this pose. There is no performance here, no direct gaze asking for approval. Instead, there is stillness. The darkness surrounding her isn’t emptiness; it’s space — space to breathe, to exist without interruption. Charcoal gave me the depth I needed to build that atmosphere, while graphite allowed for subtle transitions, almost like whispers of light moving across the surface.
This work is deeply personal to me. It speaks to the idea that strength is often found in what we choose not to reveal directly. By turning the figure away, I wanted to create intimacy without exposure, power without spectacle. It’s an invitation to slow down and look closely — to see the humanity in shadow, and the quiet resilience held in a single stance.
