I approached this drawing by focusing closely on the human face and the way emotion can gather around a single feature. The eye became the center of the composition, rendered with careful shading so that the light within the pupil feels alive against the darker tones surrounding it. I allowed the charcoal to soften and blur along the skin, creating a gentle transition between shadow and light.
The face is only partially revealed, with the nose and brow emerging gradually from the surface of the paper. This choice keeps the viewer close to the subject, almost as if they are witnessing a quiet and private moment. The expression remains subtle and open, leaving space for interpretation while the reflective eye holds the viewer’s attention. The drawing lives in these soft contrasts, where small shifts in tone shape the presence of the figure and give the portrait its quiet intensity.
